KBKG’s southeast director and Cost Segregation expert John Hanning, was recently featured in Milton Neighbor, a local publication from the Milton/Alpharetta area. The piece, by Marchet Butler, beautifully captures the Hanning family and provides an insider’s look into who John is as a person in business and in family life.
A Sense of Adventure
The Hanning Family
By Marchet Butler
Meet the Hanning Family. They’ve started a life in Milton with 3 young kids and lots of enthusiasm. John is from Columbus, Ohio, and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in economics and a minor in accounting. After college, John worked for the international clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch in the Store Planning department at the company’s headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. It was through Abercrombie and Fitch that he met his wife, Olivia.
Olivia is from Grand Island, New York, a suburb of Buffalo. An accomplished high school athlete, Olivia played college soccer for Catawba College in North Carolina. She eventually transferred to Vanguard University and graduated with a degree in K-12 physical education. While Olivia was a manager at one of the Abercrombie and Fitch stores in Southern California, she became “phone” friends with John.
Six months later, Olivia visited John in Ohio on her way to work for the summer in Nantucket, MA and the two hit it off. John was Olivia’s date to a wedding later that summer and then he took the 32-hour drive with Olivia back to Southern California. “We probably talked about 26 of those 32 hours,” said Olivia. “You get to know a person very well after spending that many hours talking.” Olivia moved to Columbus to be near John and the couple was engaged 2 years later. They married in 2008 in the Cayman Islands. A move back to California and Olivia started her first teaching job as the P.E. teacher for 1st to 3rd graders. She also began her Masters degree at Vanguard. When I asked her about her passion for her profession, Olivia said, “I always loved P.E., and I saw that it was the kind of job that I would be able to have fun. Plus, I’ve found there’s always that one teacher to whom kids connect, and for many kids, that’s the gym teacher. Each year, it’s my mission to help at least one student.”
John, meanwhile, started a new career in California. John’s work is a niche specialization in the world of tax accounting where he uses his practical knowledge of construction management to help property owners save money on their tax obligations. John loves visiting the diversity of properties and locations for his work: “One day I’m visiting an apartment complex; another I’m at a ranch in Montana, and another at a Fortune 50 chemical plant. Peeking behind the curtain of so many different types of businesses holds my interest.” While building his career in the industry, John also earned his MBA from Ohio University.
The Hanning’s have had a sense of adventure throughout their family life. They went snowboarding in Switzerland for their honeymoon and they’ve moved multiple times for work or family. In fact, they moved from California to New York and then to Columbus all within ten months. Now, they’ve made their home in Milton, this time for John to establish a KBKG presence in the Southeast in downtown Alpharetta. With all the development and growth in North Fulton, John is excited about the future of his work here in the area. You can learn more about John’s work at kbkg.com. Olivia keeps busy as well. Today, Olivia is an assistant physical education teacher at Birmingham Falls Elementary and with their kids, they are finding friends and fun in our community.
The Hanning’s have three children. Ocean, 6, is a kindergartner at Cogburn Woods Elementary. She loves dressing up, singing, dancing, and gymnastics. Kingston, 4, is a preschooler at Alpharetta Christian Academy. He’s played T-ball and will start baseball soon. He has a big heart and loves his siblings. Breckon, who also attends Alpharetta Christian Academy, is “all boy.” This two-year-old loves to wrestle, dance, and play any kind of ball.
Life is very busy at the Hanning home, but it’s a good one. We’re so glad to have them as part of our growing community.
Meet John and the rest of the KBKG Atlanta team at our Grand Opening event on Thursday, April 26th. Please RSVP: http://info.kbkg.com/kbkg-atlanta-rsvp. We hope to see you there!
